personality: With the death of her son shortly after his birth, Esme gained a maternal instinct. With time, and changing into a vampire, she gained the ability to care passionately about people. She is intelligent, like her husband, but prefers to focus her smarts on history and restoration as opposed to medicinal knowledge. She, like most other vampires, struggles around the scent of human blood, but she doesn't let it control her. She would do whatever it took to keep her family in tact, and she suggests the rest of them do the same.

history: When Esme was sixteen years old, she broke her leg falling out of a tree she decided to climb. A doctor named Carlisle Cullen helped her, and the experience stuck with her. She married later in life, after all of her friends did, when she was twenty-two. She only married Charles Evenson because her father begged her to. Before the union, she was indifferent to Charles as a person, but it didn't take long for her to discover he had a dark side. He abused her. Soon though, he was drafted to fight in WWI, though he was much more terrifying when he returned. At the age of 25, Esme discovered she was pregnant with their first child and, knowing how dangerous it was to bring a child into the world that was her environment, she ran away to live with a cousin in Milwaukee. Days after her son was born, he died of a lung infection and, overwhelmed with grief, Esme threw herself off a cliff in hopes of ending her life.

However, she woke up, staring into the eyes of the doctor who healed her ten years prior. Happier than she thought she could be, Carlisle and Esme soon married, and built a family around them. She supported them, even when they brought new members into her life. Esme even helped plan Edward's wedding to Bella, and she stood by Bella's decision to keep the baby when she announced her pregnancy. She also provided a cottage on the Cullen property so that Edward, Bella, and granddaughter Renesmee could have privacy.
